Frequently asked questions
Why should I become a supporter of Civil Beat?

Supporter revenue helps fund a professional staff of journalists who focus on investigative and explanatory reporting to help inform the community about issues of importance. The strength of any nonprofit organization lies in the support of community members through their donations and gifts.

Are there other ways to support Civil Beat?

Yes! In case an annual or monthly gift doesn’t quite suit you, we have many other ways to give.

  • Stocks and Bonds
Gifts of stock and other appreciated securities are a popular way to give because it may help you avoid the capital gains tax while giving you a charitable income tax deduction. It is also very easy to do, and as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Civil Beat will not be taxed on gifts from your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension or other tax deferred plan.
  • Bequests
A charitable bequest through a will or living trust ensures that your legacy lives on. You may leave a gift of a specific dollar amount, an asset or a percentage of your estate.
  • Life Insurance
One of the simplest and most tax-advantaged ways of making a gift to Civil Beat is to name us as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy. You can assign a new or existing policy to Civil Beat, designated as a full or partial beneficiary.
  • Company Matching
Your company may match your gift, which could potentially double the value of your donation. To find out if your company matches employee donations, please check with your company’s Human Resources department.

For assistance, further information, and so that we may properly acknowledge your support, please contact Mariko Chang, Director of Philanthropy, at membership@civilbeat.org.

How do I get a receipt to declare my tax deduction?

When you donate, our system will send a receipt to the email address you provide. If you do not receive an emailed receipt within 24 hours of your donation, please reach out to membership@civilbeat.org. You will receive another statement at the beginning of next year acknowledging your donation to Civil Beat. You can use either for tax purposes.
